Quick, Cheap Crafts
Ok so it's been far too long since I've taken the time to write here... However, I've still been trying new things and taking photos along the way. So I'm going to stop and take the time to write a few down right now and then will get to writing about the others too.
For today - I'm going to share a few simple crafty things I've done. So lets get right to it, shall we?
First, I did a candy tray / dessert plate for a birthday. We always had a special birthday plate for birthday dinners so I wanted to give something similar to a friend. I've done the painting ceramics at stores and had them fire them and then go pick them up. It's always fun but the hardest part is always waiting to go pick it up. I didn't want anything near as complicated (I'm no artist) and I had heard of writing on dishes and putting them in the oven to make your designs permanent... so that's what I tried.
Birthday Plate:
Plate
Sharpie Markers
Rubbing Alcohol
Paper Towel
I took a dollar store plate and wiped it down with the paper towel that was dipped in rubbing alcohol. Pulled out a few colored Sharpies and started writing and drawing dots.
If you mess up your design in the process, no worries - pull out a little nail polish remove and wipe it away :)
Place plates in a cool oven and preheat to 365 degrees F. Once your oven is heated, allow to bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, turn off the oven but leave the dish in there - don't open the door.
After this, I filled the plate with candy and wrapped it in plastic with a bunch of curly ribbons tying it shut.
Now I will admit, I never washed the plate. And I've read some mixed reviews. Some people say colored markers don't work. Some people say they're hand wash only. And yet others have even said they tried scrubbing it off with a scrub brush and it stayed... But I still like it and I'm sure there will be more dish experiments... eventually, I may even give one the dishwasher test. But until then... I'm just rating this as a fun, unique thing to do - not saying it's permanent or dishwasher safe since I've not tested it just yet and the reviews I've read have been mixed.
Brush Vase:
Glass Bowl / Candle Holder
River Rocks
Make-Up Brushes
This was my $2 fun creation. For the longest time my brushes have been standing in two shot glasses on my bathroom counter. It was time for a change. And while I was in the dollar store getting the plate for the craft above - I found a nice glass candle holder that looked wide enough and was a nice shape. I had looked in the dishes and a few other spots too - but with the candle holders is where I found what I liked the most. I also found a bag of river rocks there - there were more than I needed, but for a dollar... well I can't complain and perhaps some day I'll find a use for the rest of the rocks :)
Anyways - I took the rocks and filled the candle holder I picked up. Then I took all my brushes and stood them up in the rocks. When I first did this I had to push a little hard or wiggle them. But the hole stays open when you remove the brush so I just put them back in the same spot each time.
For $2 it was a great update to my bathroom counter! It took about a week for the hubby to notice the change, but when he did he said it looked nice :)
Well, I know that's not much... but after stopping while writing to make dinner and all, it's getting late so that's all I'll share for now - promise to take the time to write more out soon though :)
