ICK!
Summer is here and my desire to eat more fruits and vegetables has increased... I always try to eat fairly decent (believe it or not), but for some reason when summer is here it seems much easier and I believe I get more fruits and vegetables in my regular diet. This is predominately a good thing, though sometimes it does lead to unfortunate side effects.
We all know there's really not much of a bad side effect for things so good... Seriously, take a second to think about it... figure one out yet?
Well thankfully this isn't always an issue, but now and then it does pop up... If you haven't figured it out yet - I'm talking about fruit flies!! You can take out the trash - keep the fruits and veggies in the fridge and still for some reason, they're in your house!
Lately they've been hanging around my lemon seeds that have been sprouting in my kitchen window.
And for some reason, instead of just being one or two of the little annoying things - there are way too many - as far as I'm concerned - because I've seen them around more lately. In the last few days there has been one flying around when I eat dinner... I saw two while cooking dinner... and they just randomly pop up. As gross as it is I'm even pretty sure I saw one fly out of the fridge the other morning... though I'm really hoping he was just buzzing around it. Anyways, to me, once I see them - they've got to go. Actually, once any bug is found in my house - it has got to go.
So on a whim I figured it was time to try to see if there was a simple way to get rid of them. So I pulled out a glass, poured in some apple cider vinegar and a little dish soap.
I've heard vinegar attracts them, and since they're FRUIT flies, I figured that perhaps apple cider vinegar would work well... it was worth a shot :)
The dish soap - well, I have heard about it in homemade bug traps before - bug spray in the house, bug spray on your plants, etc... and since I had some fruit scented as well - I added a little bit in hopes it would help more. I figured it couldn't hurt :)
I used about a half cup of the vinegar and just a little bit of the soap (a few drops), but honestly I don't think I needed that much vinegar.
Within just a few minutes - I realized there must be way more of those little suckers hiding around than I had guessed... they were already starting to land on the glass to go check out the vinegar... GROSS!
Overnight, I'm hoping I got rid of them all! If there are more after this - there's a serious problem! Because this stuff seriously seemed to attract them!
I had certainly attracted more than I expected to. In that regard, it was a bit shocking... but on the plus side, I had at least figured out that vinegar and dish soap work :) I don't know that the dish soap made a huge impact but since it is used in other bug repellents and thing to kill them - I figure it probably did help some.
So with a successful experiment underway - I figured it was one worth passing along. Should you see any fruit flies - put a little vinegar and soap out and they'll disappear :)
UPDATE (7/15) - a friend posted a solution she found online... guess what, pretty much the same thing! So really adding the soap wasn't a genius idea, but it does confirm it was a good one :)

I must try this! I've had this problem many times this summer. I find if I take out the trash every night, it helps a lot. Thanks for sharing!
